Club sports in college

leave a comment »

Nestled in between good old Intermural semester sports and your official collegiate teams is the ignored middle child of the college athletics scene: Club sports.

Club sports seem to exist for a few reasons:

  • the school doesn’t offer a program (eg. lax, rugby…)
  • there isn’t an NCAA college network
  • the sport is just too damn weird (ultimate frisbee)

It’s really a mixed bag with what you can get out of club sports. You can find some really dedicated and serious athletes and some people just looking for a good time or athletic community.

Here’s what to expect, in general terms:

  • travel to play other schools’ club teams in your area or region
  • practices scheduled though the school rec system
  • maybe coaching, maybe not (depending on club budget, alumni availability, ect.)
  • can be a rather expensive habit: travel, tournament fees, hotels, club dues, uniforms… again, depends on amount of funding, if any, your club gets from the school
  • get as much out of the experience as you put in

My own experience with club sports in college has been rewarding. I’ve found people who I expect to remain friends with for a very long time as well as a much needed outlet for my energy and fulfillment of my craving for team sports.

I’d encourage anyone, of any age, at any time of the school year to explore club sports options at their school. Most school clubs are required to maintain websites and current contact information. Check it out and see what you can get yourself involved in!
